Critics Consensus

Writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait's first foray into horror doesn't break any new ground, but it does wring fresh terror from a well-worn genre formula -- and offers a few nasty laughs in the bargain.

Willow Creek | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter Despite the impressively committed performances by the two leads and the screenplay's touches of sly humor, the proceedings are mostly all too redolent of the endless found-footage horror films that have followed in the wake of The Blair Witch Project Jan 5, 2015 Full Review Willow Creek | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com "Willow Creek" is a defiant slow burn. Rated: 3/4 Jun 6, 2014 Full Review Willow Creek | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Mr. Goldthwait gives us lovely, buttery daylight scenes, nicely relaxed leads and dialogue that pays attention to fluctuating gender dynamics. Jun 5, 2014 Full Review Willow Creek | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The experience is one you’ll not soon forget. Rated: 3/4 Jul 18, 2022 Full Review Willow Creek | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Craig Schroeder Battleship Pretension Bobcat Goldthwait's Willow Creek is the first film in quite some time to give me those foundation shaking, temperature-changing scares. Mar 4, 2021 Full Review Willow Creek | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It Willow Creek builds suspense in the most minimalist of ways, but the time it takes to get you there, combined with a short payoff, ultimately lets the viewer down. Deals S I really liked the acting and the tension between the couple, but found footage films and the jerky-running footage are not my cup of tea. It’s just not scary and seems like a cop out. And I don’t want to give away the ending, but the reveal was a real let down. It was obvious in a way, and used nudity as a shock factor. Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/04/24 Full Review Aidan B The first half or so is a bit generic, but the payoff in the last half is definitely worth it. "Willow Creek" is a surprisingly unnerving film that manages to stand out from other found-footage movies. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Sharon M I came across this film by accident & thought what the hell,I'll give it a go. Wow! My heart has been racing, the tension as you watch them sitting there terrified is crazy. I always imagine myself in that situation & how scared I would be. Very similar to Blair Witch which I love & I love this too. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Nunya I actually found myself tensed up & on the edge of my seat watching parts of this movie. I rarely get this absorbed, so I was pleasantly surprised. The ending was a little disappointing, but who am I to complain? I was riveted, therefore I'm grateful! Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/08/23 Full Review Alec B Goldthwait directing a found footage film about Bigfoot at first seems too strange to accept, however he does pull off an effective, if slightly cliched, slow burn horror piece. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review Andy F Fantastic fun. Nothing new in the found footage genre but this really captures the atmosphere of the real Willow Creek town (I want to go!) and it may just inspire you to dig a little deeper into the Bigfoot mythology Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
